Ok, I’ve held off for long enough. It’s time to indulge our sweet tooth (teeth?)! The Ladies Aid Society of Hampton Methodist Church put out a lovely cookbook in 1899 which happened to include an extensive section devoted to all things sugary. Believe me, baking one of these delectable desserts will make you the most popular member of the household…at least until the cake is gone.

Who doesn’t like a good sponge cake, right? Well, the wonderful thing about the recipe below is that you can get both a good arm work-out and a delicious cake at the same time! Remember, this recipe was put out in the days before electric mixers arrived on the scene. So put some omph into it and beat those eggs with enthusiasm.
