5. Updates – Syrian BVOR/JAS/PSR

Many of you have been asking about the status of Syrian BVOR cases. We were informed by the government that there was a “pause” in releasing Syrian BVOR (Blended Visa-Office Referred) cases.  For over 4 weeks, the sponsorship agreement holders (SAH) have not received any new Syrian BVOR cases.

Please see the link to glossary. http://www.united-church.ca/sites/default/files/refugees-glossary.pdf

Also attached is FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

The government is busy trying to settle the 25,000 Syrians who have either arrived, will be arriving, or will have been approved by Feb 29th.  There is no clear direction or instruction on the next steps.  We have no further knowledge of whether there will be any Syrian BVOR cases in the future. Please see link to article re Syrian refugees.  Please note that ongoing applications are not affected.  For those of you who have submitted applications in process, we will send you the notice of arrival (NAT) when we receive them from the government.

There will be other non-Syrian BVOR cases that will be shared; however, we do not know what that looks like either and are not sure how many will be shared.  These lists are sent to SAHs periodically.

Other considerations for your congregations is to sponsor a privately-named (PSR) case.  Attached is a Financial guidelines sponsorship chart based on family size.  PSR cases do not receive any government funding and the start-up costs and income support is the congregation’s (CG) responsibility.

Currently the populations of interest to the government are LGBTQ, Iraqi, Syrian, Eritrea and Tibetans.  Out of these populations, those under ministerial instructions are LGBTQ, Iraqi and Syrian.  There is no limit to sponsoring these 3 populations through the PSR program.

Of additional interest to us, as a SAH, are stateless populations such as Palestinian, Rohingya, and Uyghur.

9. Public Performance Copyright Site Licenses – Deadline March 14th

This is the tenth year that Maritime Conference has negotiated a public performance copyright site license agreement with Criterion Pictures and Audio Ciné Films Inc.  We are able to offer a similar opportunity this year.  Although the cost has risen slightly from last year, it remains a better rate than an individual congregation could negotiate.  You may wish to visit their respective websites for further information:  http://www.criterionpic.com/ and http://www.acf-film.com/splash_en.php

The combined cost for both companies to cover congregations in Maritime Conference will be $1.30 per person plus HST based on average Sunday attendance as reported in the Year Book.  The license will be in effect from April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2017.

Please complete the application form if you are interested in registering your congregation for this license and forward it to Maritime Conference Office along with a cheque made payable to Maritime Conference Fund by Monday, March 14, 2016.  This is the ONLY opportunity to enroll for this year!

If you have any questions about this program, please contact Lorraine Horyl by email or by phone 506-536-1334, Ext 5.
