June 10, 1925 was a big day in the history of The United Church of Canada and it was a big day for Lily Maynard and Morley Harvey as well! Lily Maynard, a registered nurse, and Morley Harvey, a farmer, were married at the groom’s home in Newport, Nova Scotia. Both Lily and Morley were Presbyterian but the minister who married them, William Ryan, was Methodist. This interdenominational set-up was fitting as June 10th was the day The United Church of Canada officially came into being. Perhaps this is the first United Church wedding performed! The following photograph came from a lady whose family knew the Harveys. According to her, Lily Harvey was a lovely person and lived to be nearly 100.
