1. Celebration of a Remarkable Life

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 11 a.m. for William (Bill) Robert Squire, who died last week after a sudden illness. Bill was the spouse of Dr. Anne Squire, the first female lay Moderator of The United Church of Canada. During her term, from 1986 to 1988, she took the first barrage of attacks against the church when we announced that gay and lesbian people were eligible to be ordained and commissioned ministers.

Bill and Anne, who met in high school, were married for more than 73 years. He died on Anne’s 98th birthday, which fell just one week after his 96th birthday, and is fondly remembered by Anne, three daughters, and five grandchildren. Bill was a charter member of Emmanuel United Church and served the church in many ways as a steward, trustee, and co-treasurer; he was also a member in a reading group at Emmanuel called the Heretics, which allowed him to explore his faith with other “questioning believers.”

The memorial service will be held at Ottawa’s Emmanuel United Church, 691 Smyth Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to the Emmanuel United Church Restoration Fund (, the Multifaith Housing Initiative (MHI) (, or a charity of choice.

2. Racial Justice Workshop – Saturday, January 21, 2017

A note from Stephen Fetter (United in Learning Webinars)

Hi folks,

I’m writing to let you know that we’ve now posted a Saturday session of the RJ workshop. We do this once a year, particularly for people who are unavailable during the week. If you could please help us get the word out I’d be grateful. The workshop will be January 21, 2017 from 11am – 3:30 pm.

We need to schedule a Boundaries workshop on a Saturday as well. Since these two workshops are mandatory, and since some of the folks who must take them are simply not available during the week, we try to schedule one Saturday session per year for each of them.

If you’d be available to help with a Saturday session for this program in the New Year, could you please click the link and let me know your availability?

Thanks in advance,
(Rev.) Stephen Fetter

3. Life, Death & After: A Small Group or Individual Spiritual Study

The Prayer Bench is grateful to the Rev. Dr. Linda Yates, author of For The Death of Me: Accepting Death, Choosing Life,  for offering her knowledge and experience in three audio recordings that form the basis of this relevant spiritual study.

“A good death begins with living in the present,”  says Linda in Session 1. Facing death can be difficult, and in Session 2, Linda plainly and passionately outlines issues of Medically Assisted Death and Euthanasia. Life after death? Linda shares how our worldview affects what we believe about life after death in Session 3. Small group are invited to look to local resources and plan a community event on a topic of interest for a fourth session. Suggestions are offered.

Put together a small group and work through the sessions together. The Leader page outlines includes an opening, questions, group spiritual practice, and blessing. A participant page and script for the audio recording are also available to supplement the easily downloadable recordings.

Or you can work through the resource on your own with the printable Individual Study Guide.
