2. REMINDER: Call for Nominations Due Feb 16

Greetings friends,

We are currently seeking nominations for some important roles, particularly in the areas of ministry and employment. As church leaders, I expect that you know some excellent candidates to be a part of these groups:

Task Group on an Association of Ministers

Ministry personnel from all streams of ministry are sought for this task group that will assess the interest in establishing an association of ministers.

Closing Date: February 16, 2017

Task Group on Admissions Policy and Procedures

A small group of lay and ministry personnel, including two ministers who have recently been admitted from a country other than Canada, are needed to evaluate the church’s current admissions policy and procedures.

Closing Date:  February 16, 2017

Financial Assistance Committee

The committee seeks two people who will bring strong experience in related financial matters, experience with financial issues in Indigenous ministries, or both.

Closing Date: February 16, 2017

Details on each of these opportunities and the nominations process are available on the website:

Please share this call through your networks and prompt those with the desired gifts to give these opportunities prayerful consideration.

This is the eleventh year that Maritime Conference has negotiated a public performance copyright site license agreement with Criterion Pictures and Audio Ciné Films Inc.  We are able to offer a similar opportunity this year. You may wish to visit their respective websites for further information: and

The combined cost for both companies to cover congregations in Maritime Conference will be $1.30 per person plus HST based on average Sunday attendance as reported in The United Church of Canada Year Book & Directory – Volume 1 Statistics.  The license will be in effect from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018.

Please complete the application form if you are interested in registering your congregation for this license and forward it to Maritime Conference Office along with a cheque made payable to Maritime Conference Fund by Monday, March 13, 2017.  This is the ONLY opportunity to enroll for this year!

If you have any questions about this program, please contact Lorraine Horyl by email or by phone 506-536-1334, Ext 5.

 4. Affirm United Annual Conference

The Affirm United/S’affirmer Ensemble 2017 annual conference will be shared in partnership with St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church and its wonderful Spirit Pride conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. The conference will be held July 28-30 on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh unceded traditional territories. Spirit Pride precedes Vancouver Pride, which takes place over the August long weekend.  The Maritime Conference Committee on Affirming Ministry is pleased to offer financial assistance of $500 each for two representatives from Conference to attend.  If you would be interested in attending, submit your name and a brief statement of why you want to attend and what benefit you hope you might derive to Rev. Bob Johnson ( or 506-465-9040) before April 30, 2017.  For more information about these events, check the Affirm United website or the links above.

5. Prayer Bench Lent Email Retreat: Practices for Living in a Troubled Word

You receive an email every Saturday in Lent. You retreat in your own space at your own time. Here are the six themes we explore:

An Unfinished World. Is life going somewhere good because it came from goodness? What are the practices for standing in “the tragic gap” and not becoming cynical or idealistic?

To Break Your Heart a Little Bit. Meet Captain Wendy Kean, chaplain with the Royal Canadian Chaplain Service. She is working on a MA at the Atlantic School of Theology on the phenomenon of child soldiers and the problem of evil. I reflect on the practices of hope she is exploring and invite you to ponder what breaks your heart a little bit and how this can be a transforming spiritual practice.

The Beauty of Darkness. Meet Alydia Smith, Program Coordinator, Worship and Spirituality with The United Church of Canada. She helps us explore the imagery that often teaches “light everything (including skin tones) is better.” She offers her favourite images that embrace the beauty of the dark.

Decisional Forgiveness. During the Amish School House shootings 10 years ago, the Amish community astonished the world with their practice of forgiveness. What does it mean to take a stance of decisional forgiveness or sometimes called “premeditated mercy”? Is it possible in our culture? Are we called to forgive much?

Daily Gratitude. Meet Bev Brazier who uses her Facebook account to share daily expressions of gratitude. I reflect on her practice, what difference it makes and what keeps it authentic. We work on our own practices of gratitude and paying attention.

A Common Heart. As we draw near Holy Week we explore Leonard Sweet’s words: “If you want to make the world better, you do it one of three ways: make it more good, more true, or more beautiful. Jesus did all three.” We get ready for the Mystery of Easter. VISIT to register ($29) or contact Janice through her website at

6. Our Committees Need You!

Serving on a Conference committee is a great way to contribute to the work of the church. A new online form will help match potential volunteers with vacancies.

You will be asked your contact information, past experience, skills, and interests. You may express interest in one particular committee, or simply indicate “Willing to serve where needed.”

When a vacancy opens, a member of the Nominating Committee may contact you. Filling out the form is an expression of interest only – not a commitment. All members of conference and presbyteries are strongly encouraged to fill it out as soon as possible.

7. Registration for YF and I@C Now Online!

Registration for Youth Forum and Intermediates at Conference is now online! Deadline to register is March 31st.  All presbyteries generously offer funding to participants – not sure what presbytery you belong to? Ask your minister to find out! Or click on the Maritime Conference Presbytery Map!
