1. Condolences – Rev. Ray Francis

Sympathy is extended to the family of the Rev. Ray A. Francis – 81, of Port Williams, NS, who passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 after a period of failing health. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a Service of Celebration & Thanksgiving will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018. 2. Elections at the Conference Annual Meeting
(CAM announcement #3)

There will be three different kinds of elections taking place at this year’s Conference Annual Meeting:

  1. President-elect: given the possibility of wide-spread systemic re-structuring in the United Church, there is a high likelihood that Conferences will cease to be at the end of 2018. However, there is still a possibility that they might not, or that implementation might be delayed. Also, the President-elect is an ex-officio Commissioner to the General Council. Therefore, in order to be prepared for all possibilities, as well as to ensure that Maritime Conference is fully represented at the 43rd General Council, there will be an election for President-elect.

Nominees for President should fill in the nomination form before March 30:

  1. Commissioners (38) to General Council will be elected as follows:
    • Remaining nominees from Presbyteries/Synod for a total of 28
    • The President-designate (Catherine MacDonald)
    • The Youth Forum pilgrim
    • 3 other persons under the age of 30
    • 5 remaining Commissioners with a balance of lay persons and ministry personnel.

Nominees for Commissioner should fill in the nomination form before March 30:

  • Please note, nominees for Moderator need to be a Commissioner in order to run.


  1. Nominees for the Denominational Executive: within the package of structural changes adopted by the 42nd General Council is a change from the current 50-member General Council Executive to an 18-member Denominational Executive. The Moderator, the immediate Past-Moderator and the General Secretary will serve on the Executive. Each Conference has been asked to nominate 3 to 5 people from whom the GC Nominations Committee will then recommend 15 people with consideration for the diversity of an intercultural church, lay/ministry personnel, and geography, as well as ensuring that competencies in theology, governance, finance, and vision are present within the group of those recommended.

4. Final Report on Regional Council Boundaries

The Boundaries Commission has released their report with final decisions. The decision for Maritime Conference remains with two Regions – New Brunswick and PEI, Nova Scotia and Bermuda – however, there have been some adjustments in other parts of the country:

5. Video Licensing

The Maritime Conference video license agreement will be coming up for renewal at the end of March. We have become aware that EDGE has begun to offer video licensing for other parts of the country, and we are investigating to see if they can also offer it for Maritime Conference. We are in the process of working out those details and should be able to provide the information regarding obtaining a license by the middle of March. Please watch the weekly email for more details.

7. Choosing Hymns Workshop at AST

Is finding what to sing in worship too often a challenge or a chore for you?  Are you in a pattern of repeating the same hymns, and can’t seem to find something that will speak to your text?  Do you find yourself thinking of the perfect hymn after the service?  Kevin Parks, University Musician at Atlantic School of Theology, is offering a workshop on Choosing hymns for worship:  What will we sing this week?  It will be a practical guide with some touchpoint ideas for getting to the hymns you really want to sing in your congregations.  Whether you are the musician or clergy, choosing hymns on your own or in a team setting, this workshop is designed to get you thinking creatively about how to choose hymns for worship.

8. Social Enterprise: Seeking the Good Society
A Symposium Sponsored by AST and Pine Hill Divinity Hall

October 11-13, 2018

The Social Enterprise movement has been sweeping across Canada for several years, gathering momentum and bringing new hope to communities and individuals. As genuine responses to the failures of the market economy and of governments to bring about lasting social change, Social Enterprise seeks a “third way” where businesses and non-profits invest in people first, solving social problems while providing meaningful employment. Local churches and parishes, too, are discovering the missional power of Social Enterprise.

  • Have you thought about what this movement represents for Canada, or for your local community?

Organizers are seeking proposals for 20-30 minute presentations to be part of the symposium October 11-13, 2018, in Halifax. (A limited travel fund may be available to help defray your expenses). Approximately 12 presenters will be invited to share their perspectives.

Please forward your proposal (up to one page), including your contact information, to no later than  April 2, 2018.

10. Pause to Listen: A Spiritual Retreat for Environmentalists
