When life gives you snow…go sleighing?

On Friday, February 8, 1907, some members of Young Men’s Bible Class of Grace Methodist Church in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (now Grace United Church) went on a sleigh ride to Fall River. The secretary, C.P. Chittick, took great care to record the schedule for the night noting that the group left Dartmouth at 5:30 and didn’t arrive at Fall River until 9:00. They sat down for a “grand dinner” at Mrs. Jamieson’s at 10:00. After a few games, they left Mrs. Jamieson’s house at 12:30 and arrived in Dartmouth at a “late hour very tired and sleepy.”

According to Environment Canada, the minimum temperature on February 8, 1907 was -18.9 Celsius with a maximum temperature of -4.4 Celsius. There had been 18.5 cm of snow a few days prior but perhaps not quite enough to make for the best of sleighing as the minutes stated that “it is hoped we will have better sleighing next time.” The poor conditions couldn’t have been too much of a deterrent though since the group was already planning on another sleigh ride in the future.
