1. Region 15 Governance Handbook
Do you know that the Region 15 Governance Handbook is posted on the Region 15 page on the Maritime Conference website? It is found under the “About Us” section. You can also access it by clicking here. In a couple of weeks there will be a recorded training session available to help you to become familiar with this living document. In the meantime, please take some time to read through it.
2. Link to Observer article with Sister Maudilia/News on Mining Restitution Fund
The Mining the Connections/Environment Working Group invites you to read and share the United Church Observer article with Sister Maudilia Lopez Cardona online. https://ucobserver.org/interviews/2019/01/sister_maudilia_lopez_cardona/
As you may recall, Maudy spoke powerfully to the Annual Meeting of Maritime Conference last May. She was also able to speak at the General Council offices, where this interview took place.
We also want to announce that together Church in Action and the United for Mining Justice Network raised $6505 for the Marlin Mine-affected Communities Restitution Project. (Background info: https://www.unitedforminingjustice.com/restitution-for-goldcorp-victims) We thank the many individuals and five Maritime Conference Presbyteries that contributed: Halifax, Woolastook, Miramichi, Sydney, St. Croix.
Jackie McVicar, a Mining the Connections Working Group member and Coordinator of the United for Mining Justice Network, will travel from Guatemala City, where she is presently living, to San Miguel Ixtahuacan, to present the funds to FREDEMI (the community group that has risked much to resist Goldcorp’s Marlin Mine) and the Catholic Parish and to express our sorrow and righteous indignation with the refusal of the United Church Pension Board to divest.
