News & Updates
From the very beginning
I always find it fascinating to view the documents recording the beginning of a church. Of course, there are a lot of events and work that goes on behind the scenes long before a church building is built but the part we usually get to see in the historical record is...
Summer Days
It looks like winter is most definitely upon us so here are some photographs from a warmer season to cheer you up. These photographs are from a CGIT camp held at Waweig in 1948. Before you get too jealous, it wasn't all sunshine there either, the last photograph shows...
Got on fairly well-Rev. David Sutherland (1859-1898)
It just so happens that November 20th in 1887 also fell on a Sunday so I thought it would be the perfect week to share this diary entry from Rev. David Sutherland. As a bit of background, David Sutherland was born in Bruan, Caithnesshire, Scotland in 1859 to Alexander...
Archives Recipe of the Month-The Bermuda Edition
We are long overdue for some recipes from Bermuda so imagine my delight when I found these recipes in the back of the UCW book "Sailing Through Uncharted Seas." The book was put out by the Maritime Conference UCW in 1987 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the...
Remembrance Day from the Archives
As we pause this week to remember our veterans, here are the names in their own writing of some of those who served. The following is from a register for those attending entertainment events for the troops put on by St. Andrew's United Church (later to become St....
A good catch!
I was so excited when I came across this photograph that I just had to share. I can say that this is officially the first fishing photograph I have come across in the Archives. Looks like the guys are pretty pleased with their catch! This was a Tuxis event held by...
Happy Halloween from the Archives!
I had to cheat a little bit, I'm not sure about other church archives but Halloween themed records and photographs are rather sparse here at the Maritime Conference Archives! Technically, the people in the photograph below are not celebrating Halloween but they are in...
Archives Recipe of the Month-The Apple Edition
Now that we're a few days past Thanksgiving, hopefully our turkey hangovers have dissipated and we can start thinking about food again without feeling nauseous. The following recipes are from a cookbook put out by the Jost Unit of what was then Gordon Providence...
Happy Thanksgiving from the Archives!
The following is a Thanksgiving sermon preached by J. Murdoch Fraser on October 14, 1957 for a radio broadcast. Rev. Fraser, who was born in Watervale, Pictou County, NS, graduated from Pine Hill Divinity Hall in 1940 and was ordained by Maritime Conference in that...
What’s on your bookshelf?
Here's a listing of some of the library books held by the Greenfield Presbyterian Church Sunday School between 1905 and 1908. This church eventually became Greenfield United Church which was part of the Florenceville Pastoral Charge in New Brunswick. Hopefully these...
