Condolences – Rev. George Feenstra

Our condolences are extended to the family of Rev. George Feenstra who passed away on February 1, 2023. The obituary can be viewed here.

Covenanting Service

A service to celebrate the covenant amongst the Rev. Catherine MacDonald, St. James United Church and Region 15 will be held on Sunday, February 12th @ 2 pm, with a reception to follow. Rev. Wendy Kean will lead the service and Rev. Dr. Ross Bartlett will preach.

St. James United Church is located at 181 Portland Street, Dartmouth; the elevator is accessed via the parking lot entrance, which is reserved for those with mobility issues. There is plenty of additional parking at Moffatts Pharmacy across the street.


Learning Events:

As a commitment to providing connection and learning, Regional Council 15 has asked committees to take a turn hosting webinars. In November we had a learning webinar on Governance and Ministry.  Our February learning event is being hosted by the Affirm Committee: Please see information and registration below.

Neurodiversity Zoom Webinar February 13, 7:00 pm-8:00 pm. Hosted by: Regional Council 15 Affirm Committee

Neurodiversity Webinar: This webinar is one in a series of education events in which we affirm and honour the gifts and presence of a diverse humanity.
This webinar introduces the idea of TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) as one way of being neurodiverse and how an awareness of TBI can lead to the beginnings of intercultural inclusiveness in our communities of faith. Intersectionality will also be discussed.

Resource person: The Rev. Shelley Pick is a volunteer chaplain and community educator with Brain Injury Nova Scotia. She has lived with a brain injury since 2007 and feels passionately about helping brain injury survivors understand and navigate their lives post injury.

If you have had your annual congregational meeting and have elected your governing body for 2023, please click on the link below to complete.  If you have not had your annual meeting, and have the same people serving in the governing body, we kindly ask you to still fill out the information forms.

“As a region, we can only do the important work and ministry within Nova Scotia and Bermuda with the help of dedicated volunteers like you. As we approach the annual meeting, some terms are ending. The Nominations Committee is seeking interested individuals who may be willing to participate in the region by serving on a committee. 

Currently, we are in need of individuals who are willing to serve:
-Nominations Committee
-Incorporated Ministries Committee
-Property Committee
-Archives Committee
-Faith Formation and Leadership Development Committee
-Faith Story and Community Covenants Committee
-Future Directions Committee

Call for Nomination to General Council Committees – Spring 2023

General Council launched their call for Nominations on February 1 and they have a few exciting and different opportunities available during this current recruitment, specifically the National Muslim Christian Liaison Committee and the Task Group to Review the Roles of the Moderator and General Secretary.  Please review the current calls and share with others.  If you think you or someone you know would be a food fit, encourage them apply or contact Member Engagement.  The deadline for receiving nominations is Thursday March 23.

National Muslim Christian Liaison Committee
The National Muslim Christian Liaison Committee fosters open dialogue, mutual respect and builds long-lasting friendships and cooperation between Christians and Muslims.  We are currently seeking one United Church of Canada representative at this time.

General Council Business Coordinator
We are seeking someone to plan and oversee the faith-filled decision-making process of the 45th General Council. The Business Coordinator serves as a part of the General Council Planning Committee to create a joyful, decisive, effective, and equitable General Council held during the United Church’s 100th anniversary.

Task Group to Review the Roles of the Moderator and General Secretary
We are currently seeking five individuals for the Task Group to Review the Roles of Moderator and General Secretary.
What role will the Moderator and General Secretary play in a future United Church of “Deep Spirituality, Bold Discipleship, and Daring Justice”? This task group will explore this question in conversations within and outside the church and develop recommendations for any changes to the roles.

The General Council Executive seeks a forward-looking collaborative colleague to join them in their oversight and governance responsibilities. To broaden the Executive’s capacity for effective governance engagement with the Strategic Plan, we are seeking nominations for people who can lead and contribute to discussions of strategy, performance, and risk related to the United Church’s climate commitments or growth objectives.
