Hello from FSLDW President Elizabeth

Hello Friends,

In an effort to visit as many United Churches within the Region as possible, on August 6 I joined worship at Central Queens Pastoral Charge, Hunter River, PEI.

Worship was led by Rev. Greg Davis with Edith Ling filling in with the Ministry of Music. I remember when Greg was a student minister doing pulpit supply at my home church in Kingston, PEI. It was delightful to witness how his enthusiasm and passion for the unconditional love of God from student ministry days continues today.

Once again it was lovely to be greeted with smiles and a few familiar faces – a 4-Her from long ago, a high school neighbour, a piano teacher, Region representatives and the grandmother of two children I had baptized in NB.

While one could enter almost any United Church across the country and feel at home, I find it so very interesting, how each congregation has their unique practices. This being Communion Sunday at Central Queens, the sanctuary chairs were placed in a circle around the communion table which held the elements and Christ candle – which, for me, made for a more intimate meal. (One of the options for sanctuaries with movable chairs rather than pews.)

As the candle was lit we were invited into “a quiet centre where God draws close to you and you to God.”

Through prayer, music, word, and the sharing of bread and wine, Greg reflected on Matthew 14 – the feeding of the multitudes. He reminded us that the miracle of the day, was how scarcity was transferred to abundance; how, in a time when compassion was far from normal, here was One who stood squarely with the downtrodden and the hungry. My take away – God’s miracles continue today as every act of compassion is a miracle.

Thank you Central Queens for the miracle of your presence. Thank you for today’s Holy miracles in your continued acts of compassion.

In peace,

Elizabeth
